Everything follows the trend, similarly in the HTML world, first came the SGML followed by HTML and now it is XML which means Extensive Markup Language. XML appears to be different as it has a wide support from a lot of companies, trying to obey this standard. Although it is never safer to make predictions, especially when computers are concerned, it now seems almost certain that XML (Extensible Markup Language) will play a big part in the Internet's future, especially the way data is stored and displayed.

What is XML?

XML is a part of the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) which allows a user to design its own mark up language. As we know that XML is descended by HTML and further by SGML. Thus, recently XML is the most powerful tool in which users can create tags and attributes unlike the previous two mark up languages.

Benefits of XML are as follows:

• Flexible: since all the advantages of SGML and HTML are included leaving behind all the drawbacks of them.
• More structured: XML is a container containing all the structured information that means content and some denotation of what role that content. XML identifies the structures present in a document.

People using XML language can make their own tags and attributes. One example is as follows: 
 (taking the name of a person)

     <middle_initial>N</middle_initial> 
     <last_name>Robinson</last_name>
</name>

Tags present here contain the information about the attribute that will be placed within the tag. The <name> tag is the root tag, where <first_name> tell the elements that is going to be represented by that tag, i.e. the first name of the person. Similarly, <middle_initial> indicates the middle name of the person where as the <last_name> tag represents the last name of that person.
